Direct Speech - Change In Exclamatory Sentence

Direct Speech -Change in Exclamatory Sentence: If the indirect command ends with full stop,we can change this to an exclamation mark. We use the reporting verbs exclaimed, praised, cried out, applauded, regretted, wished, desired etc. With exclaimed we generally use an expressions for feelings such as exclaimed with fear or joy etc. We also use the conjunction that to introduce the reported sentence and change to an appropriate past tense.

  • Gaurav exclaimed with joy that they had won the match. (Indirect Command)
  • Gaurav said, "Hurrah! We have won the match."  (Direct Command)
  • She exclaimed with joy in Shimla that it was a very pleasant weather. (Indirect Command)
  • She said in Shimla,"Wow! What a pleasant surprise it is." (direct Command)
  • The spectators applauded him saying that it was a classical goal.(Indirect command)
  • The spectators said,"Bravo! A classical goal."(direct Command)
  • Change in Narration : Exclamatory Sentences : - Sentences containing sudden expressions of joy, sorrow, anger, applause, surprise, contempt are called exclamatory sentences.

    Look at the following examples.

    1. She wished that she would be a good lawyer.   ( Indirect)

           She said, " If I were a good lawyer !"            ( Direct)

    2.  Mukul exclaimed with sorrow that he had been destroyed.   (Indirect)

            Mukul said, " Alas ! I have been destroyed".  (Direct)

    3.  My mother exclaimed with sorrow that her dress was messedup.  (Indirect)

             My mother said, " Oh ! Her dress was messedup."   (Direct)
